Restoration of the Church

The restoration works of St. Olaf’s Church have been funded by the Tallinn Church Renaissance
Program.

Restoration works in 2023

During the works, the chapel’s exterior façade was given a fresh new appearance and cleaned
of dirt accumulated over the years. In addition, three of the four window sills were replaced, as
they could no longer be restored. Almost the entire plinth (base) of the chapel had to be
replaced—only a short section was preserved to display the original structure.

Restoration works in 2022

Restoration work was carried out on the roof of the Chapel of St. Mary. During the roofing works, all roof sheet metal and the underlying battens were replaced, and new walkways were installed in the attic. A new lightning protection system was installed, and the chapel’s spire and cross were restored. Restoration of Hans Pawels’ cenotaph continued.

Restoration works in 2021

The main entrance door of the church and the door of the south chapel were restored, and the main portal of the church was conserved. The windows of the south chapel were restored, and stained glass designed by Dolores Hoffmann was installed. Hans Pawels’ cenotaph was illuminated, a new canopy was installed, and façade works were carried out around the cenotaph. Landscaping work was also carried out in the churchyard.

Restoration works in 2020

The façades of the south chapel were restored, and a replica of the historic stone cross was
installed at the gable peak of the roof. During plaster removal, rare medieval carved stones
were discovered in the wall and are now displayed on the façade. A restoration plan for the
chapel’s stone windows was completed. Archaeological research was carried out in the
churchyard.

Restoration works in 2019

The façades of the church’s western tower were restored, and the tower’s viewing platform was
reconstructed. The wooden walkway of the platform was replaced with stainless steel grating
and raised above the roof sheet level. The roof sheet beneath the platform was also replaced,
and rain gutters were installed to direct rainwater to the corners of the tower. In addition, 38
chandeliers with faulty electrical systems were repaired, and the portal of the south chapel was
conserved.

Restoration works in 2018

Repairs were carried out on the roof of the south chapel.
